Introduction to the article:
As a key component in the brain responsible for information processing, the development of biomimetic synapses with both digital and analog functions is crucial for the hardware implementation of the nervous system. In this article, inspired by the critical roles of sodium and potassium ions in synaptic transmission, lithium (Li), an alkali metal element belonging to the same family, was employed in the design of bifunctional artificial synapses. The incorporation of Li endows electronic devices with various synaptic functions. Artificial neural networks based on experimental data exhibit high performance close to ideal accuracy. In addition, the regenerative ability allows the simulation of synaptic functional recovery by low-frequency stimulation, which is beneficial to prevent permanent damage due to intensive neural activity and ensure the long-term stability of the entire nervous system. What is more striking about lithium-based bionic synapses is that it can not only simulate biological synapses at the behavioral level, but also realize mechanism simulations based on artificial voltage-gated "ion channels". The concurrent digital and analog features lead to lithium-doped artificial synapses with multiple synaptic functions, which operate in a mode similar to the human brain, whose two hemispheres are respectively good at processing imagination and analyzing information.
